About us

On December 6, 1957, the Barbados Arts Council (BAC) was established, setting in motion a cultural awakening that would change the landscape of the island’s creative expression. Led by its first President, Hugh Springer (later Sir Hugh Springer), the BAC embraced all artistic disciplines, including music, dance, drama, literature, and visual arts. It grew out of the earlier Barbados Arts and Crafts Society, founded by Mrs. Goldie White, and inherited not only its mission but also its passion for elevating the arts.

In its formative years, the BAC received crucial support from the British Arts Council, which donated its equipment after ceasing operations in Barbados in 1959. But it was the late Karl Broodhagen, a visionary painter, sculptor, and teacher, who became the soul of the movement. Broodhagen joined the BAC as visual arts advisor and helped transform the island’s artistic future. In a time when art was considered impractical and artistic careers were often dismissed, he stood firm, inspiring others with his talent and dedication.

Broodhagen’s influence did not stand alone. His involvement galvanized a generation of pioneers including Fielding Babb, Keith Blackett, Edmund Gill, Clifford Hobbs, Hubert Brathwaite, Maurice Drakes, Gordon Parkinson, Briggs Clarke, Oscar Walkes, and many
others who would help lay the foundation for a thriving creative community. When Queen’s Park was no longer available to the Council, Broodhagen was instrumental in securing a new home at Pelican Village. This location FIXremains the heart of the BAC, hosting exhibitions, poetry readings, lectures, book launches, and tributes to artists who shaped Barbadian culture.

Younger generations have continued to carry the torch. Artists such as Clairmonte Mapp, Adrian Compton, Corrie Scott, Eric Stewart, Neville Crawford, and Neville Legall became frequent exhibitors, paving the way for today’s stalwarts like Everick Lynton, Larrie Belgrave, and Glenroy Jordan. The synergy between the experienced and the emerging remains a defining feature of the BAC’s exhibitions, enriching the entire community.

Behind the scenes, the Council has also been upheld by individuals who served with dedication and distinction. Keith Blackett as Treasurer and Edward Oxley as Honorary
Secretary each held their positions for more than 25 years, demonstrating deep commitment to the Council’s mission. Mrs. Annette Warden, who began her service as an attendant in December 1967, later became Administrative Secretary. Often described as the glue that held the BAC together, she remained a constant presence until illness forced her to step aside. Mrs. Maureen Ifill, Gallery Attendant, has also served with unwavering
loyalty for over two decades.

Among those early pioneers, Fielding Babb stands out for his lasting impact. A prolific painter and dedicated art collector, Babb frequently held solo exhibitions at the BAC gallery. His shows not only inspired his peers and younger generations but also brought in much-needed revenue through commissions. Devoted to the development of others, Babb invested his time in mentoring artists and encouraging them to reach their full potential.

The BAC’s philosophy has always been rooted in inclusivity. Unlike other institutions, the Council has never shied away from giving new and unrecognized artists a platform. By allowing emerging talent to exhibit alongside established professionals, the BAC created a space for organic mentorship and growth. This tradition has produced wave after wave of artists who now lead the island’s visual arts scene.

Today, the Barbados Arts Council stands as both a guardian of heritage and a champion of innovation. With a legacy built on mentorship, accessibility, and artistic excellence,
it continues to inspire and uplift generations of Barbadian artists, ensuring that
the creative spirit of the island remains vibrant and enduring.
